Bikeways and Pathways

The County Wide Active Transportation System has several different types of corridors, from two-way cycle paths to paved shoulders to signed routes.

Type of corridor with description
Type Description
One-way cycle path A path for cyclists and walkers that is 1.5 m wide on each side of the road. They are often green in colour.
Two-way Cycle path A two-way cycle path is two 1.5 m wide paths that support opposing directions of bicycle traffic. It is separated from vehicle lines by a buffer like a planter or flex bollards.
Paved Shoulder An asphalt lane for bicycles measuring anywhere from 1.2 m to 1.8 m.
Buffered Paved Shoulders An asphalt paved shoulder for cyclists, with a 0.3 m to 1 m buffer between motorized traffic.
Multi-use Trail An asphalt or gravel trail that is a minimum of 3 m wide.
Signed Route Unless cycling is restricted, all roads are designed for both motorists and cyclists. Some roads have “CWATS Route” signs as wayfinders to guide people on the CWATS network.
