County Installing 4-Way Stop at Intersection of County Roads 31 and 14

The County of Essex is installing a 4-Way Stop at the intersection of County Road 31 and County Road 14 in Leamington in an effort to increase public safety and reduce the number of collisions.

The 4-Way Stop is scheduled to be installed on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Signs advising motorists of the change have been installed near the intersection.

The County is installing a 4-Way stop following a requested safety review that concluded traffic volumes supported a controlled intersection and that 85 per cent of motorists travelling those corridors exceed the posted speed limit.

About 2,470 vehicles per day travel through the County Road 31 corridor, with seven per cent identified as heavy vehicle traffic, and about 1,432 vehicles per day travel through the County Road 14 corridor, with 15 per cent identified as heavy vehicle traffic.

The volume of vehicles through this corridor and the vehicle volume split warrant a controlled intersection. Traffic volume meets the 350 per hour threshold and the volume split exceeds the 65/35 benchmark, with 69 per cent on County Road 31 and 31 per cent on County Road 14.

The most frequent type of collisions at that intersection are “right angle collisions,” where one vehicle fails to stop as required. There were seven such daylight collisions from 2015 to 2017 at that intersection.

These types of collisions can be reduced with all-way stop control, oversized Stop signs, flashing beacons and improved sight lines approaching the intersection.
