County Road 23 culvert replacement project on tap for autumn
Essex, Ont. – Essex County’s rigorous culvert inspection process revealed issues with a steel pipe on County Road 23 and work to replace it will begin in the fall.
Low bidder D’Amore Construction was awarded the $488,370 plus HST contract and anticipates the project at the Ninth Concession Road Drain should take about four weeks to complete.
Earlier this year, a shoulder surface failure was detected on County Road 23 during the county’s comprehensive culvert inspection program. Temporary repairs were made immediately utilizing large steel plates to stabilize the shoulder and adjacent pavement.
An inspection revealed a significant deformation at the base of the steel pipe that continued below the water line. The corrugated steel pipe, constructed in 1968, had reached the end of its life and required immediate replacement.
Utilizing a fast-track schedule, Stantec Consulting prepared plans to upgrade the existing structure with a precast concrete box culvert.
Since County Road 23 is a designated haul route to the regional landfill, the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority will designate another route for the duration of the project.
