Drive Cautiously in Winter Conditions as Crews Clear Essex County Roads

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution in winter conditions and watch for County of Essex crews as they clear the roads.

It’s never safe to pass a snow removal vehicle. Snow plows are extra wide and create clouds of snow, which reduces visibility for trailing vehicles. It is best to wait for the plow to pull over before passing. As well, it is important to keep parked vehicles off roadways so the plows can do their job.

Drivers are urged to adjust their speed and be more alert when the cold and snowy weather hits. Snow and ice on roadways can reduce tire traction. Blowing snow can reduce visibility.

Environment Canada has issued an alert saying a winter storm could hit the region starting Wednesday, Feb. 2, and continue through Friday. Snow could be heavy at times with accumulations of 20 to 30 cm expected by Friday. Snow being blown by wind gusting from 50 to 70 km/h may reduce visibility on the roads.

County crews spray roads with a salt-brine solution, which prevents snow and ice accumulation. When temperatures dip below –12 C, salt treated with magnesium is applied. Plows are on the roads as soon as the snow starts to fall.

The county maintains 18 salt/plow routes and is responsible for maintaining more than 1,500 lane kilometres of roadway, including 84 bridges. Crews maintain a 24-hour weather watch, which includes road patrols. They are dispatched from four permanent depots, spaced strategically across the county.

Remember: when you see snow, go slow! For more tips go to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website's winter driving page.
