Essex-Windsor EMS Celebrated 5th Annual Survivor Day
Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was proud to host the 5th Annual Survivor Day, this past Friday, February 26th, in partnership with Southwest Base Hospital Program, Windsor Regional Hospital, St. Clair College and Physio Control.
Survivor Day is an event that celebrates survivors of trauma and out of hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA). The event is an opportunity for patients (survivors) to share their stories and reunite with paramedics, fire fighters, police services, ambulance dispatchers and community members who played a role in their survival.
At least 30 patient cases were recounted, where first responders and support staff were all recognized for their pivotal life-saving roles.
“It is truly a remarkable event. We are so proud to bring together many of the survivors with the exact people who were there to help them, at the most critical of times” said Cathie Hedges, EMS Captain, Professional Standards and event organizer.
Dr. Paul Bradford, ER Physician and Medical Director of the Southwest Base Hospital Program was emcee for the afternoon, which was filled with overwhelming joy, emotion and gratitude.
“It means so much to us to be able to meet those who’ve helped us. Saying ‘Thank You’ just doesn’t seem to be enough. We are so grateful” said Catherine Marcoux, a participant at the event. Marcoux and her husband wanted the opportunity to recognize those who were integral in saving her newborn son’s life back in 2015.
“The annual event brings attendees from across Windsor and Essex County to celebrate the exceptional efforts of first-responders, supporting staff and community members” said Hedges. “We look forward to next year’s celebration and we appreciate the opportunity to honour our paramedics, fire fighters and community for their outstanding dedication and bravery”.
