RE: In Memory of 215 Children Discovered at the Kamloops Indian Residential School
The flags at Vermilion Town office will be flown at half-mast for 8 days and 23 hours, following the discovery of remains of 215 children at the Kamloops Indian Residential School; in memory of the thousands of children who were sent to residential schools, for those who never returned, and in honour of the families whose lives were forever changed.
“It is absolutely devastating to hear that the remains of 215 children have been discovered on the grounds of a former residential school in Kamloops,” stated Mayor Caroline McAuley. “The community of Vermilion holds the victims and their families in our thoughts.”
The Town of Vermilion also recognizes that this discovery may be triggering to those who attended—or whose family member(s) attended a residential school. A Residential Schools Crisis Line (1-866-925-4419) is available 24 hours a day for anyone experiencing pain or distress as a result of their residential school experience.
